The People at Kartaway Waste Management Group

The Whelan family have a long involvement in the industry and bring their expertise to the table, get to know more about them in the short profiles below:

Tony Whelan
Non-Executive Director, Chairman

Tony Whelan commenced at Whelan the Wrecker in 1956, becoming a Director of the Company and Director in charge of demolition operations in Melbourne until 1980.

In 1977, Tony commenced the Kartaway Rubbish Removal Group, as a part of Whelan the Wrecker, overseeing the expansion into Mornington Peninsula (1982) and South East Queensland (1985).

Tony went on to become the first Chairman and Managing Director of the newly formed Whelan Kartaway Pty Ltd on 1 September 1987.

During the 1990s, Tony Whelan was, for many years, the Chairman of the Bin Group – a subcommittee of the Victorian Waste Management Association (VWMA) – and was awarded life membership of the VWMA in 2002.

James Whelan
Managing Director

James commenced working with Kartaway in 1989 in operations and general administration. In 1996 he was appointed a Director and General Manager and in 2001 he accepted the role of Managing Director of Kartaway.

James has been an Executive Member of the Victorian Waste Management Association (VWMA) since 2001 and was President of this industry association from 2007-2010.

In 2010, James was elected in an Executive position for Waste Contractors and Recycling Association of Queensland (WCRA Qld) and has held the position since this time.

Together with his brother, Mark, James continues to grow Kartaway within the waste management sector.

Mark Whelan
Director National Operations

Mark commenced with Kartaway in January 1997 as Supervisor of the Brunswick Waste Transfer Station. Four years later, in 2001, Mark moved to Head Office following his appointment as National Operations Manager.

Mark’s formal qualifications in the environmental and waste sectors, coupled with practical experience across industry tiers gives him a wide network of consultants. This along with a hands on working knowledge of all aspects of Kartaway’s business has enabled him to develop Kartaway’s profile throughout Australia.

Mark was appointed as a Director of Kartaway in September 2002 and continues in this role today.
